Single in London - 4 March 2006
The nice builder arrived around 9am this morning, not so bad considering, except that I still felt I had to be up and dressed well before he got here. The cupboards are all done and he's started working on the floors. I'm sure it will be lovely when it is done, but for now it is complete chaos. At least I can get to the washing machine though.
In anticipation of this evening's single party run by Meet at Last, I went off shopping to buy a dress. I'm feeling a bit chunky at the moment and wanted something flattering but something that wouldn't make me feel uncomfortable. I do wonder at what age you should stop wearing really short skirts. I'm 45 and on 'thin' days still think I can get away with it. The blokes I know tell me that I look great in them, but the women are a little less complimentary, and that makes me wonder. So, for tonight, I bought a rather pretty but very simple brown wrap dress from Phase 8. The idea is that I can dress it up with loads of jewellery and make it look really special.
About 6pm I started to get ready. Discovered I have NO bubble bath at all other than some Radox 'relax your muscles' stuff. Definately something for the shopping basket tomorrow:). Still, it was lovely to have a bath and not worry about whether the builder was going to walk through the door. Sometimes, just like the girl in the clothes advert, I really enjoy getting dressed more than actually going out! The little brown wrap dress looks fine...not as great as it would do if I had a bit more of a gym body, but pretty good all considering.
It took me ages to get to the Meet at Last party. The Montegue Hotel is a lovely boutique hotel in Bloomsbury - the sort of place your mother would *really* rave about. The conservatory bar was warm and friendly and with about 40 people there, it was neither too busy nor too quiet. The only problem was, as always, the quality of the men. Even Adrian, who helps host some of the Meet at Last events, agrees that the blokes are definately not as special as the women. And I think the same is true for all UK singles events and speed dating events. I chatted to a few interesting people, though the nicest was some ten years younger than me and had just given up a city job to work for himself. I think I now really like 'people like me' who have done just that.
One of the main problems with 'drinks and nibbles' is that you never know what the nibbles are going to be. In this case, they were the absolute minimum - olives, nuts and crackers. So, I was seriously tempted to go for the 'bad' option and buy a burger and chips on the way home. I'm proud to say that I managed to avoid doing that, instead going for a bowl of home made soup when I got home. Perhaps I'm growing up?
